Nikola Pastuović was a professor at the Faculty of Teacher Education of the University of Zagreb (formerly Faculty of Philosophy – Pedagogical Sciences), and before that in the Centre for Pedagogical Training and Research of the University of Zagreb in the status from Associate Professor to Full Professor. He retired in 2007 and 2009 received the status of Professor Emeritus at the University of Zagreb.


He has acquired two doctorates (in the fields of psychology and pedagogy) and has been elected to the highest scientific status (scientific consultant) in both fields.


He has published (not counting articles and contributions in the press, book and peer reviews) 162 works: 10 books, 19 book chapters, 2 scripts, 65 peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals and 66 professional articles.


Prof. Pastuović’s scientific contribution is most evident in three interdisciplinary scientific and research fields: the influence of cognitive and affective traits on the quality of life; the theory of lifelong learning with a special emphasis on adult education; and the science of educational systems.


His interdisciplinary research, presented in the book “Educology”, has contributed to the formation and establishment of the new interdisciplinary scientific field “Educational sciences” in the Republic of Croatia’s taxonomy of scientific fields.


He has introduced several new courses at the university level: "Theory of educational systems", "Management of the educational system" and "Industrial Andragogy".


He was an editor of the journal Research in Education; he reconceptualised the journal Andragogy into the interdisciplinary journal Thélème and he was an editor for the field of education in the Encyclopedia department of "The Miroslav Krleža Lexicographic Institute". Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Andragogy, Journal of the Croatian Andragogy Society and a member of Editorial Council of Croatian Journal of Education.


He is one of the founders of the Croatian Andragogic Society, initiated the establishment of the Academy of the Educational Sciences and was one of the initiators in the process of establishing the Centre for Educational Research and Development at the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb.

Under his leadership, the Department for Pedagogical, Psychological and Didactic Development of Teachers of the Faculty of Teacher Education of the University of Zagreb was transformed into the Department for Educational Studies. He was leading the scientific project “Equalisation and Improvement of the Quality of Compulsory Education in the Republic of Croatia” at the Centre for Educational Research and Development at the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb.


He was engaged by educational policy structures and the Croatian government to lead several teams on the development of some important documents in the field of strategic planning of education:

(2007) National pedagogic standard of the Republic of Croatia
